Phenibut HCL is a neuropsychotropic drug. It was initially developed overseas and is currently used there to treat anxiety, alcohol withdrawal, insomnia, tension, and stammering (amongst other things). In the US, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) hasn’t approved it for any clinical use.

Preclinical studies have reported that Phenibut HCL possesses anti-convulsant properties. The drug has also exhibited nootropic (cognition enhancing) and anxiolytic effects in various mice studies. However, there have been reports of Phenibut causing toxicity and dependence.

Phenibut acts as a GABA-mimetic (it imitates the effects of GABA). It primarily activates the GABA (B) and, to some extent, GABA (A) receptors. This may explain Phenibut HCL’s potential anxiolytic effects, as GABA reduces the excitability of brain cells to help you calm down.

Phenibut has also been shown to stimulate dopamine receptors and increase the concentration of dopamine at low doses. The tranquilizer and nootropic drug has also been found to antagonize beta-phenethylamine (PEA). PEA is a central nervous system stimulant.
